The Swaralaya Samanwayam dance and music festival ended with a bang on Wednesday night at the open-air Rapadi theatre. The event mixed classical tunes with film songs to greet the New Year. The last day featured top acts like Veena and violin concerts, Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam dance dramas, and a musical orchestra by famous artists. Veena expert Sivakami Natarajan and her students started the show with a classical Veena concert called Veenalaya Tharangam. Seven artists from Swaranjali, Thiruvananthapuram, played together, creating a magical harmony. “The seven Veena players represented the seven notes that form the foundation of music,” said Ms. Natarajan. Later, violinist Toronto A. Jayadevan, known internationally, performed pure Carnatic classical tunes with his team. Jayadevan played in front of his respected teacher, Nedumangadu Sivanandan. Nanji Arul played the mridangam and Thripunithura Radhakrishnan the ghatom. The crowd’s energy jumped as Avijith Das and his Bengaluru group performed an exciting Kuchipudi dance. Gopika Raj Pillai from Chennai then gave a graceful Bharatanatyam performance. As midnight approached, singers entertained the audience with Malayalam, Hindi, and Tamil songs. This marked the end of 11 full days filled with dance and music joy.
