Tens of thousands of people from around the world gathered in Fort Kochi to watch the Pappanji burning ceremony. The giant effigy of an elderly man was set ablaze to mark the New Year. For the first time, massive Pappanjis were burnt at the same time at Parade Ground and Veli Ground. The Cochin Carnival Committee organised the event at Parade Ground, while the Gala De Fort Kochi charity hosted the programme at Veli Ground. The district administration and police ensured strong security, deploying about 1,200 police officers to prevent any problems. Traffic rules were in place to control the crowds in Fort Kochi and nearby areas. Other parts of the district also held Pappanji burning events, drawing large crowds. The police and Excise department worked to stop drunk driving and drug peddling during the celebrations.
