Lokpal Cancels ₹5 Crore Tender for Seven Luxury BMW Cars After Backlash
January 1, 2026
The anti-graft ombudsman Lokpal has cancelled its controversial tender to buy seven luxury BMW cars worth around ₹5 crore. Officials said this decision was made two months after the tender was floated on October 16, 2025. The tender aimed to provide one BMW 3 Series 330Li car each for the Lokpal chairperson and six members.
The cancellation came after the full Bench of the Lokpal passed a resolution and issued a corrigendum on December 16, 2025. The tender had specified BMW 330Li "M Sport" models with a long wheelbase, all in white color. The cars' estimated on-road price in New Delhi was about ₹5 crore.
The move had drawn strong criticism from opposition parties. They accused the Lokpal, known as the "guardians of integrity," of "chasing luxury over legitimacy." Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh called the institution "Shauq Pal," mocking the luxury purchase. Former Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant demanded the Lokpal cancel the tender and choose electric vehicles made in India instead.
The tender also required the selected vendor to train drivers and staff through practical and classroom sessions. Training included learning all BMW controls, safety systems, driving modes, and fuel efficiency.
Lokpal is led by chairperson Justice A M Khanwilkar (retd) and can have up to eight members. This cancellation marks a significant retreat after facing public and political pressure over the luxury car purchase plan.
