A new Tamil translation of the book 'From Volga to Ganga' (Volgavilirundhu Gangai Varai) by Rahul Sankrityayan has caught the attention of readers in Tamil Nadu. This book, popular among Communist party members and beyond, tracks human history and migration from the Volga River to the Ganga. The latest translation, done by theatre artist and English teacher Mangai, uses the English edition published by LeftWord. It was priced affordably at ₹100 by the publisher Seer Vasagar Vattam. So far, 20,000 copies have been pre-booked, and another 10,000 copies are scheduled to be sold at the Chennai Book Fair this month. Thambi from Seer Vasagar Vattam said, “Tamil literary circles have celebrated the book for 70 years. Its pre-publication sale is a testament to its popularity.” The book has six Tamil translations since its original release, with this one adding fresh vigor. Mangai was inspired to translate after reading the LeftWord version, which includes a preface by Communist leader S.A. Dange and other historical notes. The original book was first published in 1942 from Hazaribagh prison, with a preface written by Rahul Sankrityayan himself. The book covers 20 chapters presenting the history and evolution of human society. Over 100 works of Sankrityayan have been translated into Tamil so far. V. Arasu, former head of Tamil at Madras University, suggests new works might build on this to explore Dravidian civilization with recent findings. The enduring popularity of 'From Volga to Ganga' shows the continued interest in politically rich and historically deep literature in Tamil Nadu.
