The Karnataka Department of Collegiate Education has directed all government, aided, and private degree and B.Ed colleges to conduct all NAAC accreditation communications and submit documents in Kannada. Commissioner N. Manjushree issued the order after a letter from the Kannada Development Authority (KDA) Chairman Purushottama Bilimale. The order states, "The NAAC evaluates and grades colleges every five years based on academic standards. Almost all documents are submitted in English, but since Kannada is Karnataka's sovereign and administrative language, daily NAAC correspondence must be in Kannada." This move comes after a Kannada professor from R.B.N.M.S. First Grade College in Bengaluru complained to the KDA. The professor claimed the Kannada department was forced to prepare all documents in English for UGC and NAAC accreditation, causing mental harassment to Kannada faculty. KDA Chairman Bilimale expressed dissatisfaction, stating, "RBNMS college has violated the intent of this order and shown an anti-Kannada attitude." He urged the Collegiate Education Department to issue a circular instructing all private degree colleges to use Kannada in UGC and NAAC correspondence and to stop harassing Kannada faculty. Bilimale also demanded a Kannadiga member on the NAAC committee from Karnataka to translate documents into English when needed. He said, "NAAC currently violates these rules by not appointing state members and pressures colleges to submit everything in English. Kannada professors have to give presentations in English and submit all documents likewise, which is unfair for Kannada subjects." He added, "Kannada is Karnataka's administrative language. Government orders clearly state that UGC and NAAC correspondence should be in regional languages. If English documents are needed, they can be translated from Kannada or handled bilingually." This new directive enforces Kannada’s importance in official educational communications and aims to protect Kannada educators from undue stress.
