Several dozen people are feared dead and roughly 100 injured after a fire broke out at a bar in a Swiss ski resort. The incident happened around 01:30 local time during New Year celebrations in the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, southern Switzerland. Police confirmed multiple nationalities among the victims. The Italian foreign ministry reported about 40 deaths based on Swiss police information. Authorities described the scene as tragic and noted it will take weeks to identify the deceased and return their bodies to families. The fire led to severe burns for most injured, many of whom were treated at Valais hospital. Its intensive care unit is now full. Ten helicopters, 40 ambulances, and 150 emergency responders attended the site overnight. Local officials ruled out any attack and are investigating the cause, which is currently believed to be a fire, not an explosion. Reports mention that pyrotechnics might have triggered the blaze, but this remains unconfirmed. Valais prosecutor general Beatrice Pilloud said, "Currently we are favouring a fire and at no time is there question of any attack." She added the district will remain closed as authorities carry out significant work identifying victims. Italian ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado warned identification will take time. The UK Foreign Office offered condolences and consular support for British nationals affected. Le Constellation bar is a popular spot with an upstairs area for football fans and a large bar downstairs. The luxury resort of Crans-Montana is well-known for winter sports.
