The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has enlisted Captain R.S. Sandhu, a seasoned pilot and ex-Air India official, as a domain expert in the ongoing inquiry of the Ahmedabad plane crash that claimed 260 lives last month. Captain Sandhu, who also trained on the Boeing 787-8 plane involved in the crash, brings a wealth of experience to the investigation team. The tragic incident, which saw an Air India flight destined for London crashing soon after takeoff, left only one survivor out of 242 passengers on board. Captain Sandhu's involvement is expected to provide valuable insights into the possible causes of the crash. Apart from his tenure at Air India, Sandhu is the founder of Aviazione, an aviation consultancy firm, and has led various projects in the aviation sector, including his work on integrating Tata Group airlines. The decision to involve Captain Sandhu comes after concerns were raised by pilot unions regarding the lack of subject matter experts in the probe. The Airline Pilots' Association of India (ALPA India) has been advocating for its representatives to be included in the investigation. While details about other domain experts involved in the AAIB investigation remain undisclosed, a team led by 56-year-old Sanjay Kumar Singh is spearheading the probe into the Air India aircraft crash. The team comprises experienced professionals from different fields such as pilots, engineers, aviation medicine specialists, aviation psychologists, and flight recorder specialists. Their combined expertise is crucial in unraveling the factors contributing to the tragic incident. The inclusion of Captain Sandhu in the investigation demonstrates AAIB's commitment to a comprehensive and thorough inquiry aimed at enhancing aviation safety standards.
