Drone Strike Kills 24 in Russian-Held Kherson Amid Ongoing Peace Talks
January 1, 2026
A Ukrainian drone strike killed 24 people and injured at least 50 in a Russian-held village in Kherson during New Year's celebrations, Russian officials said. Three drones hit a cafe and hotel in the Black Sea town of Khorly. Vladimir Saldo, the Moscow-installed leader in the region, said one drone carried an incendiary mix causing a fire. Ukrainian officials did not comment, and the attack could not be independently verified. Several Russian leaders condemned the strike. Valentina Matviyenko, chair of Russia's upper house, said the attack "strengthened Russia’s resolve to quickly achieve its goals" in the Ukraine conflict. The attack follows Moscow claims that Ukraine targeted one of Vladimir Putin's official residences in northwest Russia with drones. Ukraine denied these claims. Russia's defence ministry said it accessed navigation data from a drone involved, confirming the target was Putin's residence. However, no proof was shared. The data would be passed to US officials. The CIA reportedly found no attack had occurred. Former US President Trump initially expressed anger but later shared an editorial calling the claims "bluster." Russia released a video showing a downed drone and a masked soldier speaking about it, but the details could not be verified. Kyiv called the allegations a ploy to derail peace talks, which have recently made progress. President Zelenskyy said in his New Year address that a peace deal is "90% ready," but key issues remain including territory. Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff said he spoke with officials from Britain, France, Germany, and Ukraine to advance the peace process. Ukraine’s chief negotiator Rustem Umerov said European and Ukrainian officials plan to meet Saturday. Zelenskyy is expected to meet European leaders next week.
