Yelahanka Alternative Housing Distribution Delayed to January 2 After Eligibility Checks
January 1, 2026
The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation will distribute alternative housing to families affected by demolitions at Yelahanka’s Kogilu Layout on January 2, a day later than planned. The delay comes as officials carefully review documents to decide who is truly eligible for permanent housing.
Minister for Housing and Minority B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan said on Thursday, "Following directions from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, officials from the Revenue Department and the GBA are reviewing documents without haste to ensure that benefits reach only genuine beneficiaries. The distribution, originally scheduled for January 1, was deferred by a day in view of the ongoing verification exercise."
Meanwhile, families from Fakeer Colony and Waseem Layout, whose homes were also demolished, protested on Thursday. They said the government had not clearly explained the eligibility criteria for new homes. This uncertainty has caused fear and confusion among displaced families.
One resident said, "After demolition too, we were asked to shift to a nearby wedding hall temporarily, but we did not agree because we fear that once we move, we may again be left with nowhere to go. We are scared that no permanent solution will be given, which is why we have stayed back at the demolition site."
Officials from the Housing Department were unavailable for comments on eligibility rules. However, earlier Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation officials told The Hindu that eligibility would be verified mainly via Aadhaar cards. If Aadhaar is unavailable, ration cards or EPIC would be considered for verification.
