Karnataka Sees 8.94% Rise in IML and Beer Sales Revenue in December 2025 Despite Volume Drop
January 1, 2026
Karnataka reported ₹1,669 crore in IML and beer sales during the last week of December 2025. This is an 8.94% increase over the same period in 2024. Excise revenue also rose by 10.19%, reaching ₹1,319.11 crore. However, the volume of IML dropped by 3.17%, and beer sales grew only slightly by 1.5%. The state sold 22.59 lakh cartons of IML and 15 lakh cartons of beer between December 23 and 31.
Despite the growth late in the year, overall 2025 sales saw declines. Between April and December, IML sale volume fell by 5.16% with 522.66 lakh cartons sold compared to 527.82 lakh cartons in 2024. Beer sales sharply declined by 16.4%, dropping from 351.07 lakh cartons to 293.48 lakh cartons over the same period.
From April to October 2025, beer sales were down 18.35%, while IML sales dropped by 1.07%. In 2024, the state sold 708.85 lakh cartons of IML and 450.36 lakh cartons of beer overall.
The Karnataka government has set an excise revenue target of ₹40,000 crore for 2025-26. This includes income from 569 liquor license auctions expected to bring in ₹600-1,000 crore. The excise department linked the steep beer sales decline to heavy rainfall and floods, especially in the Kalyan Karnataka region. Price hikes on certain IML categories also contributed to slow growth.
Sources said, "The beer sales did not pick up in summer months and after the dip in temperature due to good rainfall, the sale of beer continued to be hit. Floods affected the sales too."
