Online Clash: HAF and Historian Audrey Truschke Battle Over Hindutva in US
January 2, 2026
An online clash erupted between the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) and historian Audrey Truschke over Hindu nationalism in the United States. Truschke, in a social media post, said there had been “many exposés” of the “far-right Hindu American Foundation.” She claimed Hindutva is “an American problem” and said far-right hate harms everyone. To back her point, Truschke shared a link to an article from Pakistan’s Express Tribune titled “Inside Hindutva’s American headquarters.” The article accuses HAF of promoting Hindutva in the US through legal actions, lobbying, and shaping narratives.
HAF’s executive director, Suhag Shukla, responded strongly on X, dismissing Truschke’s claim. Shukla questioned Truschke’s credibility and asked, “How can a historian rely on what she called ‘AI-generated Pakistani propaganda’ to attack Hindu Americans? Let that sink in.” She suggested the Express Tribune article was not a serious or trustworthy source.
The Express Tribune piece, published on December 28, 2025, cites reports from organizations such as Rutgers Law School and Political Research Associates. It claims HAF plays a key role in shaping US discussions about India and Hindu identity.
On social media, Truschke faced criticism linking her to Pakistani or Muslim advocacy groups including CAIR, pointing to her past work on South Asia. Meanwhile, HAF says its mission is to fight anti-Hindu bias and protect Hindu civil rights in the US. Supporters of Shukla warned that the claims unfairly target Hindu Americans and try to silence genuine advocacy. The organization has repeatedly condemned 'anti-Hindu' and 'anti-Indian' hate driven by groyperism and white nationalism.
