Tamil Nadu Sees 8.4% Vehicle Registration Rise in 2025; Electric Vehicles Surge
January 2, 2026
Tamil Nadu recorded nearly 21.18 lakh vehicle registrations in 2025, marking an 8.4% rise from the previous year, according to data from the Vahan dashboard of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Registrations were highest in urban areas, with Tambaram and Poonamallee each registering over 50,000 vehicles. Other busy RTOs included Red Hills, Chennai (North), Sholinganallur, and Coimbatore (North), each with more than 35,000 registrations. Around 40% of total registrations were from Chennai, Chengalpattu, Coimbatore, Tiruvallur, Madurai, and Salem districts. In contrast, 11 mostly rural RTOs/UOs reported under 5,000 registrations. Two-wheelers made up about 16.4 lakh of the total, while light, medium, and heavy motor vehicles accounted for nearly 4.2 lakh registrations. Petrol vehicles led with nearly 17.46 lakh registrations in 2025, a rise from 15.54 lakh in 2024. Diesel vehicle registrations saw a slight uptick. Electric vehicles saw a significant surge from 1.35 lakh in 2024 to 1.74 lakh in 2025, mainly due to two-wheelers. The growth in electric vehicles is supported by the State government's recent decision to extend a 100% road tax exemption on EVs until 2027. The Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy, first introduced in 2019, initially offered a three-year tax exemption, which has now been extended twice.
