CPI(M) Raises Alarm Over Secret Voter Survey in Assam's Muslim-Dominated Bajali
January 2, 2026
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has raised concerns about a “verbal” voter survey in 115 Muslim-majority polling booths in Assam’s Bajali district. On January 2, 2026, the CPI(M) wrote to the State’s Chief Electoral Officer about this alleged violation during the special revision of electoral rolls. Suprakash Talukdar, Secretary of CPI(M)’s Assam State Committee, said the Bajali District Commissioner called a meeting on December 27, 2025, after the draft electoral roll publication. Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass and mostly school teachers attended it. Talukdar said the District Commissioner verbally ordered these officials to survey voters in 115 booths — 76 in Bhawanipur-Sorbhog LAC and 39 in Bajali LAC — all areas with mostly Muslim voters. No written order was given for this verification. He added, “What is extremely objectionable and unacceptable is that these instructions were specifically issued for polling booths where the officially appointed Booth Level Officers [BLOs] are Muslims.” The CPI(M) attached a list of these booths and their Muslim BLOs with their letter. They also said the officials asked for written orders but were ignored. The party claims that using other government servants to verify voters instead of official BLOs breaks Election Commission rules. They demand strict action against officials if the claims are true to keep the revision process fair and unbiased. The CPI(M) stressed the need to protect the credibility and impartiality of elections in Assam.
