Nellyakkattu Mahadevan, a 55-year-old captive elephant, died Friday at the Thirunettoor Mahadeva temple in Maradu. The elephant was brought to participate in the temple festival but showed signs of uneasiness and was not paraded. At around 4 p.m., as it was being led to a lorry to return to its caregivers, the elephant collapsed. A veterinary doctor attended to it but could not revive it. "The elephant is owned by Tony Thomas from Poonjar and has been in the custody of a family running an Ayurveda eye hospital for about 20 years," said Fen Antony, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Social Forestry department, Ernakulam. Authorities will conduct a post-mortem examination on Saturday to determine the cause of death. The elephant is scheduled to be cremated at a Forest department facility near Malayattoor. The elephant was also known for appearing in the Malayalam film Thuruppgulan.
