Indore Water Crisis: Death Toll Rises Amid Contamination; Officials Transferred, Uma Bharti Demands Action
January 2, 2026
The Madhya Pradesh Congress says 15 people died after drinking contaminated water in Indore. The BJP-led State government confirms 5 deaths so far, including a woman on January 2, 2026. After a review meeting led by CM Mohan Yadav on January 2, the government transferred a senior Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) official. The Congress demands accountability for all responsible. Former Chief Minister Uma Bharti criticized her own party’s government, calling for “maximum punishment” for the culprits.
In a report to the M.P. High Court, four people over 60 died in Indore’s Bhagirathpura due to water problems. Indore District Collector Shivam Verma updated the toll to five. He said the official numbers are based on medical confirmation. So far, 210 people have been admitted to hospitals after falling ill from the water.
CM Mohan Yadav said on December 31, 2025, that some deaths might not be counted as people go to private hospitals. Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav noted hearing about 10 deaths from the outbreak.
IMC Additional Commissioner Rohit Sisoniya was transferred on January 2. Show-cause notices were issued to him and Commissioner Dileep Yadav. Sanjeev Shrivastava, in charge of water distribution, was also relieved. The moves follow a report by Additional Chief Secretary Sanjay Dubey and instructions from CM Yadav.
Complaints of dirty water had been coming from Bhagirathpura for over a year. Though a new water line project was planned in November 2024 and tendered in August 2025, the work stalled. IMC officials allegedly ignored repeated complaints.
Madhya Pradesh Mahila Congress president Reena Bourasi called the actions a “mere cover-up,” saying transfers are “not a punishment.” She accused the government of protecting those responsible and acting only after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi tweeted.
Lab tests show polymicrobial contamination, with bacteria, viruses, and parasites found in 26 of over 70 samples from the area. More than 2,800 people have fallen ill from Narmada river water supplied to homes by the IMC.
Uma Bharti slammed the government on social media, questioning why officials continued their roles amid the crisis. She said, “A severe atonement must be made for this sin... maximum punishment must be given to all the culprits from bottom to top.” She called it a test for CM Mohan Yadav and said all responsible stand accused of crime against the public.
