Kogilu Layout Demolition Families Still Await Promised Houses as Govt Delays Allotment
January 2, 2026
More than 150 families affected by the Kogilu Layout demolition have yet to receive the houses promised by Minority Welfare and Housing Minister B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan. The minister had said these families would get “good news” on January 1, but the allotment is now expected only after January 5. The delay is because the government has not finalized the count of eligible beneficiaries. Sources told The Hindu that the eligibility criteria for distributing houses are still unclear.
An NGO working with residents revised its survey, saying nearly 180 families were affected—10 more than previously estimated. These extra families were not present during the first survey after the demolition but have required documents to prove eligibility. The NGO made video recordings of their statements and shared them publicly to demand their inclusion.
Samyukta Horata Karnataka, a community group, criticized the government for what it called an “inhuman mistake.” The group warned about the government not keeping its promise to help all affected families. Earlier, the government assured that homes would be given as a humane gesture for the New Year. But now, it seems the government plans to give houses only to those with proper documents and who are from Karnataka. The group demands that all families be rehoused, without discrimination between locals and outsiders.
