January 3, 2026
Six people have died and over 200 were hospitalized due to an outbreak of vomiting and diarrhea caused by contaminated drinking water in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, a senior official said on January 3, 2026. Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava said on January 2 that he received information about 10 deaths, while residents in Bhagirathpura area claimed 16 deaths, including a six-month-old child. Collector Shivam Verma told PTI Videos, "At present, 203 patients are undergoing treatment in 41 hospitals across the city and six people have died." Among the patients, 34 are in intensive care units (ICUs) with special treatment monitoring. The Madhya Pradesh government reacted by removing Indore municipal commissioner Dilip Kumar Yadav and suspending two senior officials: additional municipal commissioner Rohit Sissoniya and Public Health Engineering superintendent engineer Sanjeev Shrivastava. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said he ordered these transfers due to the health crisis in Bhagirathpura. The government reported to the High Court that the diarrheal illness outbreak is now under effective control with continuous minute-to-minute monitoring to prevent resurgence.
