Members of the All India Kisan Kheth Mazdoor Sanghatan (AIKKMS) protested on January 3 against police arrests in Vijayapura. Protesters had gathered outside the home of M.B. Patil, the district's in-charge Minister. The protesters want a government medical college in Vijayapura and have been on dharna for over 100 days. They oppose the plan to set up the college through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). AIKKMS said cases were filed to suppress this just demand. The organisation stated, "We strongly oppose the police action against the protesters and the filing of cases against them." They accused police of harsh treatment, including towards women protesters. AIKKMS State president M. Shashidhar and Janandolana Mahamaitri leader Ugranarasimhe Gowda joined the protest.
