Students at UAS Dharwad Protest Over Delayed Scholarships and Poor Facilities
January 3, 2026
Students of the College of Agriculture in Dharwad protested at the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) campus on Friday. They demanded immediate release of scholarship funds and better facilities. The Students’ Association led the protest and handed a memorandum to the authorities. Sanat Totiger, Association president, said basic amenities in hostels were missing, causing hardships. "The university failed to pay travel and daily expenses for students in national athletics and yoga contests," he said. He added scholarships for OBC and minority students have not been released for two years. "While SC/ST students get their scholarships, OBC students are deprived despite repeated requests," Totiger said. He also criticized the government for reducing OBC scholarships to ₹15,000 and increasing college and hostel fees to ₹1.25 lakh. Totiger pointed out a faculty shortage at the college with 2,000 students and only 82 permanent staff, 20 of whom will retire soon. No fresh faculty recruitments have been made for years. He warned the protest would intensify without positive response. The students seek urgent action to ease their hardships.
