Heroes Honored at SCG During Ashes Final for Bondi Terror Attack Bravery
January 4, 2026
A sold-out Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) roared as Ahmed al-Ahmed, with his arm in a sling and hand on his heart, walked onto the pitch just before the final Test of the Ashes series began. Al-Ahmed, a Syrian-born father of two, helped stop one of the two gunmen during the Bondi terror attack. He joined 14-year-old Chaya Dadon, who was shot in the leg while protecting young children that night. She arrived on crutches.
The crowd stood in respect as the faces of Al-Ahmed and Dadon showed clear emotion. The stadium screens displayed the 15 victims’ names with the words "forever in our hearts." Leading a procession onto the pitch were first responders including paramedics, doctors, police officers, and lifeguards, some of whom helped during the attack while off-duty.
Australian players Alex Carey and Cameron Green applauded as Al-Ahmed and Dadon passed. The ground announcer said, "Thank you everybody, thank you for sharing our gratitude for the incredible service that these individuals and many others provided. We thank you all for your continued care for our community in response to this tragedy. Thank you."
After both national anthems, the heroes and first responders met New South Wales Sports Minister Steve Kamper and Cricket Australia’s CEO Todd Greenberg. Retiring batter Usman Khawaja led the Australian team to shake hands with the group.
First responders honored at the SCG tribute included Brett Simpson and Andrew Bibby (intensive care paramedics, NSW Ambulance), Detective Sergeant Cole Shanahan and Senior Constable Paul Drinias (NSW Police), Dr Matthew Oliver (Royal Prince Alfred Hospital), Dr Rachael Wilkes (St Vincent’s Hospital), and lifeguards Leah Trend, Scott Gibbons, Daniel McLaughlin, and Jackson Doolan. Registered nurse Naomi Or and SES unit deputy commander Vladimir Kotlyar were also recognized along with heroes Ahmed al-Ahmed and Chaya Dadon.
