Emergency services have stopped searching for a 16-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man missing in waters off Sydney’s beaches. The boy was on a boat that capsized near Palm Beach on New Year’s Eve, resulting in one death. The 22-year-old man, Sushan Khadka, went missing at Coogee beach on New Year’s Day after being caught in a strong rip tide. New South Wales police said they suspended the searches after extensive efforts found no sign of the men. Palm Beach marine patrols and Coogee land patrols continue. This announcement comes after six people drowned at Australian beaches over the New Year period, including a 34-year-old man at Jervis Bay and a 25-year-old woman at Maroubra. Other victims included a man in his 50s at Shoalhaven, a 45-year-old woman named Melissa Austin at Dunbogan, and a 35-year-old Irish man at Whitehaven beach. The Palm Beach incident began when a boat capsized near Barrenjoey Headland, killing a 47-year-old man and injuring another passenger rescued by helicopter. Additionally, a search for a missing snorkeler near Perth has been reduced. Royal Lifesaving Australia reports 29 drowning deaths nationwide since December 1 this summer.
