January 4, 2026
Rafiq Yallur, who was accused of killing a midday meal worker at Yellapur in Uttara Kannada district, was found dead on Sunday. Farmers spotted his body in a forest near Yellapur and alerted the police. He faced charges for stabbing Ranjita Bansode, 31, on Saturday in Kalamma Nagar, Yellapur. Ranjita died on her way to the hospital.
The police revealed that Rafiq likely attacked Ranjita after she rejected his marriage proposal. A police officer said, "He had approached her earlier also, but she had not agreed. He stopped visiting their home after her family warned him. It is not sure if they had a relationship."
Ranjita was a divorcee living with her sister’s family. She worked as a midday meal staff at a local school. Shivaram Hebbar, MLA, visited the victim’s family.
According to a complaint by Akshata Bansode, Ranjita’s sister, Rafiq was Ranjita’s childhood classmate. Akshata said, "She had stopped meeting him or taking his calls after her sisters and mother warned him. But he kept calling her repeatedly."
Police registered a case under the BNS sections and the Prevention of Atrocities against SC/ST Communities Act.
On Sunday, members of some Hindutva organizations protested in front of the Yellapur police station. They shouted slogans against the police. The victim’s brother joined the protest.
