January 4, 2026
A bird survey at Cherumukku-Venjali wetlands near Tirurangadi spotted 72 bird species on Sunday, January 4, 2026. This survey was done by the Bhumitra Sena Club of PSMO College, Malappuram Social Forestry Division, Cherumukku Natukaryam Koottaima, and Malappuram Birders. It was their fifth annual survey to mark National Bird Day on January 5. Photographer Vijesh Vallikkunnu started the event. Cherumukku Nattukaryam Koottaima president V.P. Khader Haji led the function, with Secretary Mustafa Cherumukku welcoming attendees. The survey was coordinated by Bhumitra Sena Club faculty in-charge P. Kabeerali. Bird watchers Vijesh Vallikkunnu, Najeeb Pulikkal, Afnida Thalappara, Abdulla Parambat, and Mohammed Thasleeque helped lead the effort. Among the sightings were migrant waterbirds like Black-headed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Brown-headed Gull, Coots, Grey-headed Lapwing, Greater Spotted Eagle, Marsh Harrier, Godwit, Yellow Wagtail, Golden Plover, Spot-billed Pelican, Painted Stork, Osprey, and Strawberry Finch. Last year, 69 species were noted, and in earlier years, up to 80 species had been recorded in this area. P. Kabeerali said the drop in bird numbers is due to more local tourists visiting the wetlands, human disruption, and climate change impacts.
