Residents Protest for New Subway on Chennai-Bengaluru Highway at Sandrorkuppam
January 4, 2026
Residents of Sandrorkuppam village in Ambur town protested on Sunday demanding the construction of a new subway on the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway (NH 48). Around 3,000 people, including women, farmers, and traders from the village, vented their concerns. The village is part of Ambur municipality wards 31, 33, and 34. It includes residential colonies and over 1,200 acres of farmland where paddy is grown twice yearly.
"We have been demanding a vehicular subway to curb accidents on an accident prone stretch on the narrow service lane," said S. Gopinathan, a local resident. The protest arose as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) planned to close the existing narrow road crossing used by villagers to prevent accidents.
Police reports confirm accidents occur frequently at this crossing, especially at night. Many villagers, including farmers, students, and traders, use this route daily. Municipal officials explained that the crossing has been in use since the road was a single lane long ago.
"We have asked the NHAI to construct the subway at Sandrorkuppam village to make the crossing safe for residents," said A. Muthusamy, Commissioner of Ambur Municipality. Nearby tribal hamlets would also be negatively impacted by the closure.
Currently, the nearest safe vehicular subway is at Solur village, 2 km away. The NHAI assured they will work to build a new underpass near Sandrorkuppam to provide safe passage for both pedestrians and vehicles.
