Florida's 'Little Venezuela' Cheers Maduro's Capture, Hails Trump for Change
January 4, 2026
In Florida's town known as 'Little Venezuela,' residents are celebrating the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. They gathered in Doral, a Miami suburb with over 40% Venezuelan residents, to express their joy and relief. Rosana Mateos, a Venezuelan expatriate since 2012, told the BBC, "I always dreamt that I'd find out in the early hours of the morning. We always figured that if something were to happen, it'd be around then." Many Venezuelans fled their country due to economic hardship and insecurity under Maduro's rule since 2013.
Bryan Marquez, who moved to Florida two years ago, said, "We suffered under them [Maduro]. It was humiliating. The economic situation was bad, and there was insecurity. We just wanted a better life." They thank US President Donald Trump for the change. Trump announced on January 3, 2026, that the US "is going to run" Venezuela with a team working for the people of Venezuela.
Young resident Luis Atristain said, "Venezuela is one of the world's richest countries, in resources. They [the US] are going to go in, restart the industry. The oil alone is worth billions, or trillions. It will help the country build up again." Others support opposition leader María Corina Machado to take leadership, as Mateos stated, "They are dirty and corrupt. We support María Corina Machado, as well as [former opposition candidate] Edmundo González. That's what the Venezuelan people want, which we've already said at the ballot box."
