Trump Shares Immigrant Welfare Data But Leaves Out India
January 5, 2026
US President Donald Trump posted data showing how many immigrant households from different countries receive welfare in the US. The chart, titled “Immigrant Welfare Recipient Rates by Country of Origin,” covered about 120 countries. It highlighted the top 10 countries with the highest welfare rates. Bhutan led with 81.4%, followed by Yemen at 75.2%. India's neighbours like Bangladesh (54.8%), Pakistan (40.2%), and Nepal (34.8%) were listed. However, India was not mentioned. The reason? Indian immigrant households use welfare at very low rates, likely under 25%, which seems to be the cut-off for the list. Indian-Americans earn high incomes, averaging over $151,000 in 2023. Many hold professional jobs in technology, medicine, and engineering, supported by selective immigration policies like H-1B visas. Because of this, they rarely rely on government help such as Medicaid or food stamps. The chart did not explain the types of assistance counted or why India was excluded. It mainly shows higher welfare use among some immigrant groups.
