French University Trains Spies with Unique Intelligence Diploma
January 5, 2026
A French university, Sciences Po Saint-Germain, offers a unique diploma course training spies and professionals on intelligence and global threats. Professor Xavier Crettiez, who teaches political radicalization, says he often does not know the real names of many students because they are secret agents.
The course, called Diploma of Intelligence and Global Threats, was created after the 2015 Paris attacks. It mixes young students and active secret service members, with about 28 students enrolled this year, six of whom are spies.
The course includes 120 hours over four months. It covers topics like organized crime economics, jihadism, business intelligence, and political violence. It costs around €5,000 for external students, including spies and corporate staff.
French secret services have grown to about 20,000 agents in agencies like DGSE (overseas intelligence) and DGSI (internal security). Other agencies focus on money laundering and mafia activity, especially in southern France.
Lecturers include former intelligence officials, diplomats, and private sector experts. Big companies in defense, aerospace, and luxury goods hire diploma graduates to combat cyber threats and sabotage.
Students like 21-year-old Alexandre Hubert and Valentine Guillot said the course opened their eyes to real intelligence work beyond TV spy tales. Nearly half the students are women, a recent trend linked to their patriotic motivation.
Professor Crettiez warns applicants must be French citizens, as security is vital. He also stresses that most intelligence jobs are desk-based, not like James Bond’s adventurous fieldwork. The diploma blends real spy training with academic learning in a discreet, old-style campus near Paris.
