Kuwait Faces Strong Winds, Dust Storms, Cold Snap, and Marine Warning on January 5
January 5, 2026
Meteorology departments in the Gulf have issued a strong wind and dust storm alert for Kuwait on Monday, January 5, 2026. Winds from the northwest will exceed 60 km/h, causing dust and sand to reduce visibility significantly, sometimes below 1,000 meters. In open desert and highways, visibility could drop to zero due to blowing sand.
Kuwait's Meteorological Department also warns that temperatures will fall below 3°C. A frost alert is in effect from 1:30 am to 8:30 am, advising farmers and residents to protect crops, livestock, and equipment.
Marine conditions will be rough with waves reaching 6 to 7 feet in the Arabian Gulf. Authorities have advised against all marine activities from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm due to the rough to very rough sea state.
The Ministry of Health urges people with respiratory problems to stay indoors and recommends wearing N95 masks to filter dust particles.
Acting Director Dhirar Al-Ali said the country is under a "deep surface low-pressure system" causing unstable weather.
Safety tips include: motorists should avoid sudden braking and keep distance; homeowners should secure outdoor items; farmers should protect frost-sensitive crops; and residents can call the emergency hotline 112 for weather-related help.
These strong northwesterly winds and dust storms are common in Gulf transitional weather periods and can disrupt travel and outdoor activities.
