Three persons were arrested for assaulting a 70-year-old woman named Unnamalai in Kaveripattinam. They tied her to a tree amid a land dispute. The violence came to light after a video showing the assault spread on social media. Unnamalai, wife of late Urumasettty, lives with her two married sons near Thevarmukkulam in Kaveripattinam. The family had a long-standing land dispute with relatives of Urumasettty's brother, Balakrishnan. On January 4, 2026, Balakrishnan’s son Kumar (53), his wife Kalpana (45), and others began clearing the disputed land on their own. Unnamalai, home alone then, objected saying the matter was under court hearing. The accused then grabbed Unnamalai, tied her to a tree, and slapped her, as shown in the video. A local BJP leader related to Unnamalai, who tried to intervene, was also assaulted. Later, the accused untied her. Unnamalai and her family filed a police complaint with the video as proof. Kumar, Kalpana, and another relative named Prabhakaran were arrested.
