11 Dead Monkeys Found in Tumakuru Forest Suspected Food Poisoning
January 5, 2026
The bodies of 11 monkeys, including two langurs, were found dead in Tumakuru district. Officials suspect food poisoning as the cause. On January 2, the Forest Department received a report about dead monkeys in Durgadahalli near Devarayanadurga forest. They found six monkey carcasses and one langur at the site. During further searches, three more monkey carcasses and one langur were found. The Chief Veterinary Officer from Urdigere Hospital conducted post-mortem examinations. Rice was found in the stomachs and intestines of the dead monkeys. Initial investigations suggest food poisoning caused the deaths. Samples were sent to the Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals in Bengaluru for detailed tests. The Forest Department confirmed that none of the monkeys died from monkey fever. A case under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 has been registered. The investigation is ongoing.
