Massive Natural Gas Blowout Sparks 25m Flame at ONGC Well in Andhra Pradesh
January 5, 2026
A massive natural gas blowout was reported on Monday afternoon at the Mori-5 well owned by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) near Irusumanda village in Andhra Pradesh's Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Konaseema District. Flames reaching around 25 meters high were visible from the site during repair work aimed at increasing gas production. ONGC said the maintenance work was carried out by the contractor PEC Operator Deep Industries Limited. Officials assured no human habitation is within 600 meters of the well. Cooling measures are underway to control the gas flow. ONGC is working with international experts on well control and casing-cutting operations. District Collector R. Mahesh Kumar inspected the blowout area and ordered evacuation of residents within 1 km. Water is being sourced from a nearby irrigation canal to help contain the fire. The gas reserve in the well is estimated at over 30 million cubic feet. Mr. Kumar said, "More clarity may emerge on capping the well over the next 24 hours." The situation remains critical as teams continue efforts to safely cap the well.
