Seven Dead, Over 100 Ill in Indore Due to Contaminated Drinking Water Outbreak
January 6, 2026
On January 5, 2026, Indore's Bhagirathpura primary health centre recorded 38 new cases of vomiting and diarrhoea linked to contaminated drinking water. The death toll has risen to seven, confirmed by Indore Divisional Commissioner Sudam Khade. Around 110 patients, including 15 in ICU, are receiving treatment. Six patients were referred for specialized care. Local residents claim the toll is higher at 17 deaths. To tackle the crisis, the health department conducted a real-time household survey using the Kobo tool, led by Dr. Chandrashekhar Gedam and coordinated by district officials. Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. Madhav Prasad Hasani deployed 200 teams to visit 2,745 households, reaching about 14,000 people. Each household received 10 ORS packets, 30 zinc tablets, and a Clean Water dropper with instructions to add 8-10 drops per 10 litres of water for purification. Health workers taught proper hand-washing and emphasized completing medicine doses and boiling water. The teams included doctors, nurses, community health officers, ASHA workers, and ANMs. At the direction of district collector Shivam Verma, five ambulances and round-the-clock doctors are stationed in the area. Patients are referred to M.Y. Hospital, Aurobindo Hospital, and Chacha Nehru Hospital, with free treatment, tests, and medicines available even in private hospitals. The main goal remains to ensure access to safe, chlorinated drinking water and stop further infections.
