Thailand Accuses Cambodia of Ceasefire Breach After Mortar Fire Incident
January 6, 2026
Thailand said on Tuesday that Cambodian forces fired mortars into its Ubon Ratchathani province along the disputed border, violating a truce signed just 10 days ago. One Thai soldier was wounded by shrapnel and is receiving medical treatment. The Thai army stated, "Cambodia has violated the ceasefire" and confirmed the attack happened in the morning. In response, Cambodia told Thailand the mortar fire was "an operational error" with no intention to target Thai land. According to the Thai army, a Cambodian unit contacted their military and claimed the incident was a mistake by Cambodian personnel. The ceasefire was agreed on December 27 to end nearly three weeks of heavy fighting that caused over 100 deaths and displaced more than half a million people. The two sides had promised to hold troop positions and avoid reinforcements to ease tensions. The border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has lasted more than 100 years, occasionally flaring into violence. The recent clashes began worsening in December when a previous ceasefire collapsed despite efforts by international leaders, including the US president and Malaysian prime minister. Both sides had also agreed not to harm civilians and to return captured soldiers if the ceasefire was respected. Despite these promises, tensions remain high with the latest mortar incident adding fresh strain to the fragile peace.
