Members of the Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS) protested outside the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) office in Kalaburagi on Tuesday. They demanded the Union government raise the minimum support price (MSP) for red gram to ₹12,500 per quintal. The farmers also called for an incentive of ₹1,000 each from the State and Union governments. KPRS district president Sharanabasappa Mamshetty criticised the decision to import large quantities of pulses, saying it caused prices to fall and hurt local farmers. He urged the Centre to impose a 50% import duty on pulses to protect domestic growers. The protesters asked for the full implementation of the Swaminathan Commission recommendations on all farm produce. They demanded the creation of red gram procurement centres for assured buying. Farmers also urged the State government to open red gram procurement centres quickly and release pending crop insurance claims soon. The protest ended with the submission of a memorandum carrying their demands to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
