Deepender Hooda Demands Haryana Host 2030 Commonwealth Games, Flags Resource Neglect
January 7, 2026
Congress Lok Sabha MP Deepender Hooda on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, accused the BJP-led central government of neglecting Haryana’s rights. At a press conference, he demanded Haryana be named host or co-host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the proposed 2036 Olympics. Mr. Hooda said, "We have decided that we will not remain silent and we will fight for Haryana’s rights from Parliament to the streets." He highlighted Haryana’s strong sports record. "Haryana, a State that brings 50% of the medals to India from the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and Olympics, has been ignored," he said. He added that Haryana athletes won more than half of India’s medals in the last four Olympics. Mr. Hooda criticized the government for moving the 2036 Olympics bid to Gujarat. "The entire sports budget will be spent there, but if this investment had been made in Haryana, it’s easy to imagine how many more medals our athletes would have won." On financial concerns, he noted Haryana’s economic contributions. "Haryana has the highest GST collection in the country, and also the highest toll collection. However, Haryana receives the lowest budget allocation in the country." According to him, though 7.10% of GST comes from Haryana, the state gets only 1.009% in return — the lowest in India. He also pointed out water and capital city issues. "The Supreme Court’s decision on the Sutlej Yamuna Link canal was in Haryana’s favour, but no progress has been made on its implementation," he said. Regarding Chandigarh, "The proposal for land to build the assembly building has not yet been approved by the central government. We cannot even build our own Assembly building in Chandigarh."
