Human Remains Found in WA, Australia Faces Record Heatwave
January 7, 2026
Human remains were found on Fence Reef Beach, Western Australia, early Tuesday morning. Police believe they belong to a 32-year-old man who went missing while snorkeling off Ledge Point beach on New Year's Day. Despite large land, air, and sea searches, he was not found until the remains washed ashore. The death is not treated as suspicious. A coroner's report will follow once formal identification is complete. At the same time, southern and eastern Australia are gearing up for extreme heat. The Bureau of Meteorology warns of the worst heatwave since the Black Summer bushfires. Victoria and South Australia expect soaring temperatures. Melbourne could hit 42°C, its first 40°C day in January since 2020. Northern Victoria may see up to 46°C. Adelaide is forecast to reach 42°C, and parts of South Australia could hit as high as 47°C by Thursday. Western NSW will also see highs around 42°C. BoM expert Angus Hines said: "There’s going to be lots of places that are within sight of their temperature records," with some areas possibly breaking records. The heatwave increases fire danger, with dry thunderstorms and wind expected later in the week. Widespread total fire bans are likely. Authorities advise people to charge devices and watch for heat stroke symptoms. This weather event poses a serious threat following Australia's recent deadly bushfires.
