Vietnam's New Law Forces YouTube and Platforms to Show Skippable Ads After 5 Seconds from Feb 2026
January 7, 2026
Vietnam has introduced a new law called Decree 342/2025 that will change how ads appear on YouTube and other digital platforms. From February 15, 2026, all video ads must let users skip them after a maximum of five seconds. This law targets long video ads that make viewers watch for 15 to 30 seconds without skipping. It also applies to static image ads, pop-ups, and banners, which must be closeable with one easy click.
The rule bans fake close buttons or misleading icons that trick users into clicking ads. All skip or close buttons must be clearly visible. The law also requires platforms to show icons or instructions to report illegal ads or opt out of certain ads.
Advertising platforms, content providers, and publishers must remove illegal or harmful ads within 24 hours when asked by the government. If they fail to do so, Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications can block their content, and legal actions may follow. Telecom and internet providers must help restrict access to ads that break the rules.
This new law is part of Vietnam's effort to create a safer and more user-friendly digital space. It improves upon a common user complaint worldwide: long, unskippable ads. When the law takes effect, Vietnamese users can expect a faster and less annoying browsing experience on YouTube and other streaming sites.
