Dr Eric Descheemaeker has settled his legal fight with the University of Melbourne. He had faced termination after a 2023 email to the Melbourne Law School dean was leaked. In the email, Descheemaeker claimed the school was turning into an "ideological re-education camp" and said there was "absolutely no end to where ‘Blak’ activists are meaning to take us – except destruction." The university tried to fire him after the email was made public around campus. Descheemaeker sued, saying the attempted dismissal was due to his political opinions, violating his rights. The case was set for trial in federal court but ended with a settlement in November. The university confirmed the case was dismissed but would not give further comments or state if Descheemaeker remains employed. His lawyer said the email expressed political opinions on "identity politics" in the law school curriculum and was protected by academic freedom. The university’s lawyer called the case “hopeless” and argued no unlawful dismissal occurred. The dispute arose amid a cultural safety review at Melbourne Law School, following complaints about institutional racism and the resignation of an Indigenous academic, Dr Eddie Cubillo, in 2023.
