Kashmir Valley is in the grip of a strong cold wave, with many areas recording freezing night temperatures, officials said on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. Sonamarg, a tourist spot in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district, recorded the lowest temperature in Jammu and Kashmir at minus 10.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night. Gulmarg in north Kashmir's Baramulla district saw its temperature improve slightly to minus 7.6 degrees Celsius. Srinagar recorded a low of minus 1.6 degrees Celsius, which is warmer than minus 4 degrees Celsius on Monday night. South Kashmir's Pahalgam had a minimum of minus 7.2 degrees Celsius. Qazigund, the gateway town of the valley, recorded 0.1 degrees Celsius. Kokernag and Kupwara recorded lows of minus 2.3 and minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, respectively. The region is currently in the coldest part of winter called 'Chilla-e-Kalan,' a 40-day period when temperatures plunge below freezing and snowfall chances are high. Meanwhile, Haryana and Punjab are also facing biting cold. In Haryana, Narnaul was the coldest spot with 4 degrees Celsius, followed by Bhiwani at 5 degrees Celsius. Ambala, Rohtak, Hisar, and Karnal recorded minimum temperatures between 8.2 and 8.8 degrees Celsius. In Punjab, Bathinda was the coldest at 4.6 degrees Celsius. Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Gurdaspur saw temperatures ranging from 5.7 to 7.5 degrees Celsius. Chandigarh recorded a low of 7.6 degrees Celsius. The cold wave continues to cause discomfort across northern India as winter deepens.
