UAE Schools Introduce Exit Permits and Tough Attendance Rules for Student Safety
January 7, 2026
The UAE has launched a new rule: no student can leave school grounds without an official exit permit. This move aims to boost student safety and discipline during school dismissal. Parents must now provide a recent passport photo of their child and a copy of their Emirates ID. They must also visit the school to sign a written agreement detailing how the student will get home. A small fee applies for the permit.
Attendance tracking has become stricter too. An unexcused absence triggers immediate action: a warning after one day, referral to the Child Protection Unit on the sixth day, and possible repetition of the academic year after 15 unexcused days. The "Friday Trap" rule counts absences on Fridays and days near public holidays as double to prevent weekend extensions without approval.
The Ministry of Education will send instant messages to parents whenever their child is absent or late. Recognized excuses include medical treatment, bereavement, official events, and emergencies, provided documentation is submitted within five days.
Schools will also help students with attendance problems by offering counseling and support programs. These changes are part of a bigger "Student Protection Policy." Authorities like ADEK and the Ministry aim to secure students from the bus ride to home. Using mandated reporting and smart gate technology, UAE schools now meet global safety standards. School leaders warn that chronic absenteeism can cause students to lose a whole year of progress.
