UAE Skywatchers Ready for 2026’s Spectacular Supermoons and Meteor Showers
January 7, 2026
The UAE is set for an exciting year in astronomy in 2026. The Dubai Astronomy Group confirms three supermoons: the Beaver Supermoon on November 24 and the Cold Supermoon on December 24, the brightest since 2019. These moons will appear bigger and brighter as they come closer to Earth. Meteor lovers have plenty to look forward to as well. The annual Quadrantid Meteor shower peaks in January, while the Perseid Meteor Shower lights up the skies in mid-August. The Geminid Meteor Shower in mid-December could dazzle with over 100 meteors per hour. Planetary events add more sparkle to the year. Jupiter reaches its brightest on January 10. June and November will feature close planet pairings of Venus-Jupiter and Mars-Jupiter. March 3 may bring a dramatic “Blood Moon” during a total lunar eclipse. For best views, experts suggest heading to desert areas or beaches away from city lights. Meteors are visible to the naked eye, so no special equipment is needed. Arrive early to let your eyes adjust in the clear winter and early spring skies. Astronomy groups in the UAE are planning stargazing events, photography workshops, and educational sessions to celebrate this celestial calendar. From shooting stars to glowing moons, 2026 invites everyone to look up and enjoy the night sky.
