Swiss Ski Bar Missed Safety Checks for 5 Years Before Deadly Fire Killing 40
January 7, 2026
A devastating fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, on New Year's Eve killed 40 people and injured 116. Families of the victims were shocked to learn the bar had not been inspected for safety in five years. Romain Jordan, representing some families, said, "The staggering number of breaches and shortcomings in the inspections raises the question of whether the municipality should be investigated with even greater urgency." Prosecutors believe the fire started when champagne bottles with sparklers ignited sound-insulating foam on the ceiling. The two bar managers, French couple Jacques and Jessica Moretti, are under criminal investigation for manslaughter, bodily harm, and arson by negligence, but they are not in custody. In their first statement since the fire, they said they were "devastated" and pledged "full co-operation" with the investigation. The mayor of Crans-Montana, Nicolas Feraud, said he could not explain why the bar had not undergone regular annual checks, which should have happened. He said, "We regret that - we owe it to the families and we will accept the responsibility." Feraud also announced a ban on sparklers in local venues. Most victims were young, including eight children under 16, and many injured suffer severe burns. The Swiss political system means safety rules are set by cantons but enforced by local municipalities, leading to questions about who failed to ensure proper inspections. Funerals for victims are ongoing as the community mourns.
