Elephant Kills 13 in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum, Panic Grips Region
January 8, 2026
An elephant killed 13 people in two days in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district, creating panic in the region, a senior forest official said on Wednesday (January 7, 2026). Four others were injured in the attacks by the jumbo, said Chaibasa Divisional Forest Officer Aditya Narayan. The tusker entered the Noamundi and Hatgamariah police station areas late on Tuesday and trampled six people to death, including four members of a family. The same elephant had killed seven people, including three family members, in the Kolhan region the day before. Teams of forest officials with experts from West Bengal's Bankura district are working to drive the elephant back to the forest. Meanwhile, six pairs of trains in the Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway have been cancelled due to the elephant's movements. The rogue elephant has caused wide panic across the area. BJP leader and former Chief Minister Madhu Koda criticised the Forest Department for not taking lasting measures. “The department used to distribute torches and firecrackers to Gram Samity members to drive away elephants, but that has stopped now,” he said. Mr. Koda also urged the government to rehabilitate orphaned children from the attacks and cover their education expenses.
