Greenlanders Say ‘We Are Not For Sale’ as Trump Eyes Buying Territory
January 8, 2026
The people of Greenland firmly oppose the idea of the United States buying their land from Denmark. Mia Chemnitz, a business owner in Nuuk, said, "We are not for sale." This sentiment reflects widespread concern among Greenlanders after President Donald Trump’s administration discussed buying the territory. Trump even hinted at using force if necessary. Greenland is a strategic Arctic island with a small population of about 56,000. It is important for US military defense and has rich natural resources, especially as ice melts due to climate change. Greenland’s representatives in Danish Parliament have called the US remarks "a clear threat". Aaja Chemnitz said, "It's completely disrespectful from the US side to not rule out annexing our country." Many Greenlanders are nervous and angry about these talks. They value respect and want decisions about Greenland’s future to involve its people. Experts warn a US takeover could end the NATO alliance. Denmark and six European allies confirmed Greenland is not for sale and must decide its own future. Greenlanders mostly want independence from Denmark but do not support becoming part of the US. Some locals feel tired of being ruled by foreign powers. Hunter Aleqatsiaq Peary said, "It would be switching from one master to another." Despite tensions, Greenland maintains good business and military ties with the US. Mia Chemnitz reminds, "We are a NATO ally and the US has had military bases here for over 70 years. We are not for sale, but we’re open for business." The controversy has stirred wide debate but the people of Greenland stand united in wanting respect and control over their land.
