A new Bollywood film, '120 Bahadur' (meaning brave hearts), has brought attention to a forgotten battle from the 1962 India-China war. The movie shows how Indian soldiers fought bravely to defend the Rezang La pass in the cold Himalayan mountains of Ladakh. Farhan Akhtar plays Major Shaitan Singh, the leader who showed great courage. Although the film did not do well commercially, it succeeded in highlighting a rare story of heroism in a war India lost.
Dialogue writer Sumit Arora told BBC, "We felt it was very important that this story must be told, we wanted to honour the people who lived the story. We have taken some cinematic liberties, but our film stays very true to history."
The 1962 war began on October 20 when China attacked India. It lasted a month, ending with China declaring a ceasefire. India lost around 7,000 soldiers and 38,000 sq km of land. The battle at Rezang La took place on November 18, at over 16,000 feet altitude. Here, 120 Indian soldiers of Charlie Company, led by Major Singh, faced thousands of Chinese troops in a fierce fight.
Despite being poorly equipped and facing freezing temperatures of about −24°C, the Indian soldiers chose to fight till the end. Only five out of the 120 men survived. Major Singh was killed but awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously for his bravery. Twelve other soldiers received gallantry medals.
Unexpectedly, their heroic stand was not believed initially due to low morale after the war’s heavy losses. It was only months later, when a shepherd found the frozen battlefield, that the truth emerged. Author Kulpreet Yadav, who wrote about the battle, said, "If it was not for these soldiers, I think India would have lost half of Ladakh."
Major Singh and his men are now remembered as heroes. Charlie Company was renamed Rezang La Company, and a memorial was built in their hometown of Rewari. The film '120 Bahadur' brings this inspiring but overlooked story to life.
