A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis on Wednesday morning. The Department of Homeland Security called Good a "violent rioter" who tried to attack ICE agents with her vehicle. However, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said, "this was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying," and demanded ICE leave the city. Videos showed a maroon SUV blocking a street and a crowd nearby. ICE agents approached the vehicle and told Good to exit. When she tried to drive away, one agent fired shots, hitting her and stopping the vehicle after it crashed into another car. Former President Trump said in a post the ICE officer was "viciously" run over and was recovering in hospital. He blamed the "Radical Left" for violence against law enforcement. Minneapolis police said Good was blocking the road and began to drive off as an officer approached. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem claimed Good was "stalking and impeding" officers and tried to use her car as a weapon in an act of "domestic terrorism." The agent who fired shots was also injured but has been discharged from hospital. The Minneapolis City Council said Good was "caring for her neighbours" when she was shot. Witness Emily Heller told CNN an ICE agent shot Good at close range through her windshield. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz denied federal statements, calling them "propaganda," and promised a full investigation. Top Democrats like Kamala Harris criticized the Trump administration's version as "gaslighting." Protests broke out near the shooting site, close to where George Floyd was killed. Other cities like New York, Seattle, Miami, and New Orleans also planned protests. Minneapolis Public Schools cancelled classes for the week due to safety concerns after federal agents made arrests near a high school. The Trump administration deployed about 2,000 federal agents to Minneapolis recently, citing welfare fraud. The mayor criticized ICE saying their presence causes chaos and splits families. This is part of a wider campaign targeting deportation order holders, including Minneapolis's Somali community, which Trump has harshly criticized. Trump also withheld federal childcare funds from Minnesota following fraud allegations linked to Somali-run centers. Similar ICE deployments have taken place in other US cities in the ongoing crackdown on illegal immigration.
