On January 8, 2026, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at 15 locations across several states. These include Muzaffarpur and Motihari in Bihar; Kolkata in West Bengal; Ernakulam, Pandalam, Adoor, and Kodur in Kerala; Chennai in Tamil Nadu; Rajkot in Gujarat; and Gorakhpur, Prayagraj, and Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. The action targets an organised gang running a fake government job scam. Initially, the scam was linked to Indian Railways. But investigations showed it spans over 40 government organisations and departments. These include the Forest department, Indian Post, Income Tax, High Court, Public Works Department, Bihar government, Delhi Development Authority, and Rajasthan Secretariat among others. According to an official, the gang used fake email accounts that pretended to be official government domains. They sent fake joining letters to lure victims. To build trust, the fraudsters paid some victims fake salaries for two to three months. These victims were falsely placed in various posts in Railways and other agencies. The ED’s swift action aims to bust the entire gang involved in this large-scale fraud.
