Pakistani Gen Z Sparks Debate with Censored Article Criticizing Establishment
January 8, 2026
A PhD student from Pakistan has stirred debate with a bold article critiquing the country's ruling elite, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and army chief Asim Munir, without naming them directly. The piece, titled "It is over," was published in The Express Tribune on January 1 but was later taken down, reportedly after pressure from the military. The author, Zorain Nizamani, writes from the perspective of Gen Z and Generation Alpha. He says the older generation's efforts to push patriotism through talks and seminars "isn't working" on young people. "For the older men and women in power, it's over. The young generation isn't buying any of what you're trying to sell to them," Nizamani said. He adds that young Pakistanis see through forced narratives despite censorship and propaganda. "You have failed to tell people what to think, they are thinking for themselves," he wrote. Nizamani also points to economic issues, noting, "The Gen Z wants erased restrictions on freelancing, the boomers want to increase regulations on freelancing." The article ends with a firm statement: "Boomers, we have had enough. We aren't buying your narrative anymore. It's worn out." Supporters of former prime minister Imran Khan shared the article, highlighting its views on youth awareness and propaganda. The PTI Canada wing tweeted, "Zorain Nizamani's article ‘It is Over’ was removed from eTribune most likely for exposing the reality." Activist Mehlaqa Samdani linked the article's removal to censorship, saying, "Not surprisingly, this article is no longer accessible... exactly the kind of censorship Zorain talks about." The incident has sparked wider discussions online about whether Pakistan’s young generation is moving from silent discontent to open opposition against a disconnected ruling class.
