CBI Summons Police in Karur Stampede Probe After TVK Rally Deaths
January 8, 2026
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the Karur stampede that killed 41 people during a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally addressed by founder Vijay on September 27, 2025. The agency has summoned several police personnel listed in the security (bandobast) plan for that day. Top officials like Collector M. Thangavel and Superintendent of Police K. Jose Thangaiah were already questioned. Police officers stationed at different spots in Karur, including Velusamypuram where Vijay spoke, have been called in. Traffic police who managed the crowd were also summoned.
The CBI took over the investigation in October 2025 after the Supreme Court's order and re-registered the case. They obtained the bandobast plan listing about 500 deployed police personnel around the event area. Daily, 5 to 10 officers are appearing before the CBI at Circuit House, the agency's temporary office. The officials ask about their exact duty locations, timings, original postings, and who assigned them to the security duty.
Residents and activists from Karur recently approached the CBI to give information on the tragedy. Authorities said these groups will also get a chance to meet investigators soon. The inquiry aims to uncover how the security arrangements related to the tragic stampede at the political rally.
