NHRC Issues Notice to Gujarat Govt Over Typhoid Surge in Gandhinagar Due to Contaminated Water
January 8, 2026
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday issued a notice to the Gujarat government over a sharp rise in typhoid cases in Gandhinagar. The State Health Department confirmed 70 active typhoid patients, mainly from one city area. Patients reported high fever and stomach problems. The spike in cases revealed major flaws in Gandhinagar's new water supply system. Authorities found seven leaks where sewage mixed with drinking water. The NHRC said this raised "serious issues of violation of the human rights of the victims." It asked the Gujarat Chief Secretary for a detailed report within two weeks. The report must cover current patient health and steps taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
